Press On

Today I want to encourage you to PRESS ON! Don’t give up! Don’t crack up! Stand up and PRESS ON. In Paul’s letter to the Philippian church he says twice “I PRESS ON”. Chapter 3:12 “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me”. He is saying that whatever he had been through, and whatever he had accomplished so far, he was still pressing on. He is saying in that he is not yet satisfied. He is still hungry for more of God. He is still reaching out for the goal of “the high calling of God in Christ Jesus”. In his own words “…I press on that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has laid hold of me”.

Before I became a Christian my life only had a natural purpose. Now it has a spiritual purpose. My life has a ‘calling’. It has a purpose. Romans 8:28 speaks of “those who have been called according to His purpose”. God has a plan and a purpose that includes you; PRESS ON! You are part of the church that Jesus is building; PRESS ON! There will be disappointments and discouragements, (Paul had many of both), but we can PRESS ON.

If we are to press on as Paul did we have to do what Paul did!

  1. He put the past behind him. “Forgetting those things which are behind, I press on.” Even good things can cause us to settle for ‘second best’. God gives us new strength for every new challenge.
  2. He was spiritually focused. “This one thing I do…” God’s plan and purpose for his life took priority. His priority was “…That I may know him” verse 10. He was “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” Hebrews 12:2.
  3. He had his eye on the prize. The ‘prize’ was the fulfillment of God’s will for his life. His revelation of the future gave him courage for the present. When he knew his end was near, he said; “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7.

Let’s all “walk by the same rule and be of the same mind” v 16.

Be blessed as you press on.
